Shark Point & Anemone Reef:
They are renowned dive sites consistently ranked among the top in Phuket, and even Thailand. They are frequently dived together on day trips due to their close proximity, offering a chance to experience the contrasting underwater worlds they each offer.
Shark Point:
Aptly named for the frequent sightings of leopard sharks, Shark Point consists of three main underwater pinnacles teeming with marine life. These pinnacles rise from the sandy seabed at a depth of around 30 meters, with the tops reaching depths as shallow as 15 meters. This variation in depth makes Shark Point suitable for a variety of divers, from beginners to experienced technical divers.
The underwater landscape at Shark Point is a kaleidoscope of colorful soft corals, sea fans, and hard corals like staghorn coral and table coral. These vibrant corals provide a stunning backdrop for the diverse fish life that thrives here. Divers can expect to see schools of colorful fish like snapper, fusiliers, and barracuda, as well as reef sharks, moray eels, and even the occasional blue spotted stingray.
Anemone Reef:
It is a submerged limestone pinnacle covered in a mesmerizing blanket of anemones, giving the reef its name. Located just a few hundred meters north of Shark Point, this reef starts at a depth of around 26 meters and rises to within a few meters of the surface. The abundance of marine life at Anemone Reef is truly astonishing, despite its relatively small size.
Divers will be greeted by a profusion of colorful soft corals and anemones, along with an array of interesting critters. Keep an eye out for seahorses, ghost pipefish, frogfish, and lionfish. Larger creatures like moray eels, huge schools of snapper and barracuda, and even the occasional leopard shark can also be spotted here.
Conditions and Considerations
Both Shark Point and Anemone Reef are exposed dive sites, meaning they are located away from the mainland and can be affected by currents. Visibility can also vary depending on weather conditions.
The dive sites are accessible year-round, although the best time to visit Phuket for diving is generally considered to be from November to April, during the dry season. Water temperatures are warm throughout the year, averaging around 28°C (82°F).
A Must-Dive for Phuket Visitors
Whether you are a seasoned diver or just getting started, Shark Point and Anemone Reef offer an unforgettable underwater experience. The combination of stunning coral formations, diverse marine life, and exciting drift dives make these dive sites a must-visit for anyone visiting Phuket.
Koh Dok Mai:
Aptly named "Flower Island" in Thai, is a small, uninhabited limestone islet rising dramatically from the sea about 20 kilometers east of Phuket. This captivating dive site is famous for its sheer underwater walls teeming with colorful marine life, particularly macro critters.
A Feast for the Macro Enthusiast
Koh Dok Mai's vertical limestone walls plunge down to depths of around 25 meters (80 feet). While the west side offers a shallower reef with hard corals from 12 to 20 meters (40 to 66 feet), the true magic unfolds on the east side. This sheer wall is adorned with a kaleidoscope of soft corals, gorgonians, sea whips, and fan corals, creating a labyrinth of nooks and crannies perfect for spotting a multitude of macro life.
Here, eagle-eyed divers can discover a hidden world of fascinating creatures. Seahorses and ghost pipefish camouflage themselves amongst the corals, while nudibranchs, with their flamboyant colors and shapes, crawl across the reef. Small white-eyed moray eels peek out from crevices, and inquisitive shrimp dart between the coral branches.
More Than Just Macro Marvels
While macro photography enthusiasts will be in their element at Koh Dok Mai, the site also caters to divers seeking a wider variety of marine life. Schools of vibrant reef fish like anthias and fusiliers dance along the walls, while larger predators like leopard sharks and barracuda can sometimes be spotted cruising by. The base of the east wall boasts a couple of caverns, adding a touch of mystery to the dive.
Dive Conditions and Considerations
Koh Dok Mai is suitable for divers with some experience due to the possibility of currents, particularly on the east side. Visibility can also vary depending on weather conditions. Diving with a reputable operator and experienced guide is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
The dive site is accessible year-round, with the recommended diving season in Phuket being from November to April, coinciding with the dry season and calmer seas. Water temperatures are consistently warm, averaging around 28°C (82°F).
A Unique Dive Experience
Koh Dok Mai offers a unique diving experience in Phuket. Whether you are a passionate macro photographer or simply enjoy exploring a diverse underwater world, this island paradise promises an unforgettable encounter with the rich marine life of the Andaman Sea.
